4 very important tips to remember this academic year
The academic year may have just started, but that does not mean you can take it easy and relax only to wake up before an exam. All students want to pass. The only problem is that we don’t want to work for it. Unfortunately, studies have become a burden one has to carry through school. It is not viewed as a learning process for what could be useful lessons later in life.
Here are some tips for you to keep in mind. Tell this to your friends too. It may help the lazy friend to improve his or her marks.
Make yourself a time table.
Always plan ahead. Divide some time for studies and some time for other stuff including playing and chatting up friends on social media. Learn to manage time. Everything has to be planned. Allotted time should be treated as sacred and no overlaps are allowed. If at all study can overlap other activities. Set up alarms to keep track of time.
Make lists of things to accomplish during study time. Be clear what you are studying and what you need to achieve. Give yourself deadlines regarding chapters and lessons. Keep a calendar on the wall with exam, test and assignment submission dates written on it.
Keep your preference in mind when you pick your study time. Realize when you are most receptive to learning. Pick that time to study. It is not a good idea to pick the night time to study because that is the best time to sleep. Schedule reviews and revisions during weekends.
How do you learn best?
There are different styles of learning and different people respond to different learning styles. Some people learn better visually. Some are auditory learners, people who memorize well when they listen and some people are kinesthetic leaners. The kinesthetic learners usually like to enact or experience what they are learning for better understanding. Once you know what kind of learner you are start making notes in that medium. For a visual learner there are some resources like Robomate+ online to learn faster. Auditory learners can make their own audio notes.
Always write notes while reading and studying. Draw and charts and diagrams where you believe it will help you understand. Learn a little about mnemonics and how you can use the tricks to memorize lists and formulae. It is a useful tool if mastered properly. Mnemonics is not very hard to learn and you don’t have to become a mnemonics expert you just have to learn to memorize your stuff. You can imagine what you are learning and conjure vivid mental images to aid memorizing. Flash cards are another way to of memorizing what you study.
Test yourself.
Do not forget to assess yourself at every turn. Every time you finish a lesson – do the end of lesson questions. Find questions from other sources about the same lesson and attempt those. Ask a friend or family member to quiz you with random questions from the lesson.
Expand your test curriculum as you finish more lessons. Ultimately design or include questions from previous papers. Build yourself to answer the complete papers. This way you can time yourself and know which section you get stuck and work on your weaknesses.
Stay healthy
This aspect of studying is very important. You don’t want to fall ill right before the exam or test. Neglecting food and exercise could lead to complications which may prevent you from attempting the exams that you have been studying for.
In case you don’t exercise, please start as soon as possible. Do light exercises get your blood running so that you feel fresh throughout the day. Learn some exercise regimes. There are exercises to do even while you are studying.
It is important to take care of your mind and body while studying. This is not only ten days before the exam, but throughout the year so that that you have time to play and take part in activities you would like to without having to worry about exams at the last moment.
Growing technology and the flipped class room
Technology is growing at an exponential rate. We can feel how fast it is growing when we look around us and find little children using smartphones and tablets to play games in comparison to some years ago when they did not have access to basic video games with low graphics. Everyone is now connected to everyone and if you know your way around you can find who is hanging out where at this time.
In a time like this, it makes a lot of sense to use technology to impart education. However, this is not a new concept. The dialogue to use technology in the classroom was started quite a long time ago. Many institutions have experimented with the use of computers and videos for some time. The increasing use of smartphones, tablets and digital readers has prompted many institutions to record lectures and send lectures by email to students who miss classes. Many educators have started using the net to send and receive homework.
Teaching students at home
Thanks to the many video hosting websites, it has become easier to make videos available online. This not only helps in students catch-up their missed lectures, but also helps in revision at any convenient time. At the same time, a new trend of flipped class rooms has been prompted. Instead of students watching recordings of what happened in class, they watch a pre-recorded lecture before class. This leaves class room time for discussions and tests. Although tests too can be given online and the results mailed directly to the teachers for assessment about a student.
This idea of flipped class rooms is very advantageous since it involves a medium of delivery that students usually enjoy. Homework is handled online and books need not be brought to class everyday reducing the amount of weight carried by children.
On the flip side it is compulsory for a student to have a delivery device – computer, laptop or tablet and internet connection.
Complete monitoring of progress
In the immediate future we can have students learning from the online lectures and assessing themselves through various tests focused at each student individually. Their use of the videos and understanding thereof can be directly monitored. Tests can be objective type or answers can be typed in and monitored by the teacher.
Wearable technology can be used for monitoring physical activity of the student to see he is getting his exercise and consuming a proper diet. Wearable technology has progressed so far that it can monitor a proper exercise and diet regime.
Social Media as an education tool
Instead of a place where people go to waste time, social media can be used for delivering educational content and starting discussions on current lessons. Essays and opinions can be reviewed not only by teachers, but also by peers.
The growth of technology may not eliminate the teacher or the classroom, but that is not the aim anyway. The teacher and educational institutions should start using technology for teaching students better.
How does Brexit affect the Oxford-aspiring student fraternity?
All kinds of divorces do have a sublime effect on the various sections of the society. And with Britain quoting their former leader Mr. Churchill, “History will be kind to me for I intend to write it”, things might not be that merry for the ones who are on the receiving end of this history being rewritten.
So when we think from the perspective of the large Indian student Diaspora who are aspiring to get their convocation ceremonies in historical fraternities such as the Oxford, Cambridge, etc, following are the major considerations we derive from this “Vote to move out”:
- BREAKING into UK might become BAD:
One of the major reasons for the pro-Brexit voting was the issue concerned with a liberal immigration policy on the EU front. “No more Immigrants for the country which forced itself into the territories of sovereign nations for centuries”. So this might lead to new rules restricting visas for foreign students to access educational opportunities.
- Scholarships might ship out more:
Due to the Brexit, Britain does not need to adhere to the scholarship quotas for EU students in its universities and this might end up with a larger pie being shared amongst the students from other nationalities. And the Indian student fraternity being a major part of it, they might just get a considerable share of the enlarged scholarship bounty.
- Indian universities might become worth a bet:
If the immigration laws do become stricter with regards to South Asians in particular, home universities with the likes of IIMs, IITs, ISBs etc might start seeming to be attractive and lucrative enough.
- Expenses in the short run will fall:
Due to the sterling’s fall against all major currencies including the rupee at the onset of the Brexit, the expenses of students studying there will fall. This will continue until the pound makes good of the fall which is expected to take a considerable amount of time as there will be a domino effect of the Brexit on the British economy in the short run.
Having said that, for the students aspiring to land into the Heathrow soon, these problems aren’t stop signs but guidelines to tackle the “not so good” situation in a bit better manner.
Learn and Attempt CAT Mock Test Papers
Cracking the CAT is not that hard, if you are very focused on your results. If you haven’t started preparing for the test take heart there are many out there who are in the same boat. These are the compulsive procrastinators who would rather start another day. While there is no time limit to start preparing – some people fail after a year of preparation and some people have cracked it after only some weeks – it is better to be safe than sorry. So if you really haven’t started preparing for the CAT, the best time to start is now.
You basically need to do two things to be prepared for CAT.
- Learn
- Test yourself.
Learning for CAT
Learning includes reading as much as possible. The objective is to increase your vocabulary and comprehension skills. Read books and editorials of newspapers. Be updated on current affairs. Read, Read and then Read some more.
Brush up on your math skills. Revise your theorems and formulae. Get used to the pattern of the test by going through the previous year’s cat test papers and cat mock test papers. Practice continuously and systematically.
While doing all of this do an analysis of yourself to assess where you are strong and weak. Once you know put in more efforts to strengthen your weak areas. Develop a strategy for yourself and test it. You should be able to attempt all questions and within time. Time management is very important when attempting the CAT.
Be a groupie
Find out other students who are giving the exam. If not in your area, then find some online. Start a group or get into one. This will help in exchanging notes and important topics, even some tips. If you are in a CAT study group on social media do not waste time chatting about other stuff, stick to business.
Attempt CAT Mock tests
When you believe you have done enough work it is time to test your skills. These are to be done through CAT mock test papers. There are various free online tests that will give you questions that could be asked according to the test structure. You will be able to further analyze yourself after mock tests.
There are some popular mock tests series that you may need to pay for attempting, but they are an excellent way of gauging yourself in the proper CAT paper environment. The feeling and experience during these tests go a long way to make you confident for the actual exam. At the same time these tests offer analysis regarding you strengths, weaknesses and time taken to answer each question. This will further help you to fortify your preparations.
Be consistent and stick to the schedule till the last day of the exam. It is not hard to crack CAT, but you need to be well prepared.

What NOT to do when getting back to school!
Hope you are enjoying the monsoons! Unfortunately the vacations are over and school has started for many and they are back in class. Honestly that is not so bad, considering some of our friends are busy running around trying to get into the best management and medical colleges in the country. I am talking about MBA and Medical aspirants who have been rushing to complete their NEET and CAT applications.
Well, it is a new start to a new year in school or college. Some of you are planning to enjoy and some have resolved to do a little better in studies this year. Whatever you have decided, it is not necessarily going to be all fun and games and it is really not healthy to be studying all the time. Since we have all decided what to do with our coming year, here is a list of what not to do when in school.
Not interacting with the teacher in class
The teacher is there for discipline, so as long as she is there you have decided to lie low. Regarding the questions she asks now and again you are definitely never going to answer them. They are answered by students who just want to show off. This is the basic resolve of probably most students in class. That is good for the teacher. Imagine what she will have to go through if all students wanted to have a conversation with her.
However, interacting with the teacher is always good. This way she makes sure you have understood the concepts you are there to learn. Teachers are not usually hassled by an active class, but are encouraged to innovate and come up with fun ways of learning.
Go to sleep and get up occasionally – to find out if the class is over
Many students go to school to catch up on the sleep they lose while watching a movie or a game last night. Back benchers have a good advantage in a larger class. They believe the teacher will not bother them if she does not see them.
Being present in class, but not attending lectures may get you a laugh in the canteen, however, it will not help you learn. Many times simply listening attentively to teachers can help you pass the term. Many students can easily grasp what the teacher says and a revision before the exam will help you get ahead.
Why study now? There is a whole year ahead
Since this is just the start of the year why should you start now? A last minute scan through the books is enough for you to get by. You have always done that and don’t have a reason to do any different now.
Remember paying attention in class along with a little revision will improve your understanding of the subject. Learning is not simply for passing tests, but what you learn today will help you later in life also. Make a plan regarding your studies and stick to it. If you have been given text books start reading them already.
Ask friends for notes and request them to explain the concepts
A common scenario is that students usually succeed in somehow whiling away class time and come to know about assignments and scheduled tests through other classmates. This is the time to ask for books and notes. Sometimes a strong scolding by parents brings out the sincerity in students and if they have a good rapport with the class toppers they will ask for their help in clearing concepts.
While we can emphasise again the advantages of being attentive in class, there are enough apps and video lectures floating around for you to learn and revise lessons. In fact, do go through these lectures before each class so that you are clear about the lessons and ready with questions in case you still did not understand the lesson after the teacher has explained it in class too.
Remember these are guidelines of what not to do during this New Year rather than a reminder of the things you have forgotten to do during summer vacations. Being ready with studies helps you pass your exams without unnecessary last minute revisions and late nights before exam day.
