MBA Entrance, Verbal Ability, Grammar 3, Module 1

Hello, everybody. Today we are going to talk about a very important topic in English

grammar that is Pronouns. Pronouns usually replace nouns in a given sentence. Let’s see the

several types of pronouns that we have, personal pronoun, possessive pronoun, reflexive

pronoun, relative pronoun, indefinite pronoun and demonstrative pronoun. So now that we

have listed different types of pronouns, we are going to see them in detail with the help of

an example. Personal pronoun, a personal pronoun can be further divided into subject,

object and possessive pronouns and these are further classified as first person, second

person and third person. So, what is a subject pronoun? A subject pronoun is used as the

subject of a sentence. Like in this case, she is my best friend. ‘She’ is the subject of the

sentence. In the next case, it is my affair. ‘It’ again becomes the subject of the sentence. The

next two examples will also give us the subject which are the doer or the be-er of the action

    in a given sentence.

Let’s now move to object pronoun. An object pronoun is used as the direct or the indirect

object of a verb or the object of a preposition. Let’s see the examples. In the first two

examples ‘her’ acts as an object pronoun and it is a direct object of the verb ‘loves’ and in

the next one, it becomes the indirect object of the verb ‘gave’. Similarly in the next example,

he is crazy after her says ‘her’ becomes the object of the preposition ‘after’. So, my object

pronoun is used either as a direct or indirect object verb or preposition.

Now, moving to, Possessive and Reflexive forms. Possessive forms basically tell us about the

ownership or possession with regards to a person or a thing. So, my, mine, yours, etc

becomes possessive pronoun. The book is hers. This example tells me that the book belongs

to her and it conveys possession.

Let’s talk about reflexive forms now. Reflexive pronoun describes the noun when the

subject’s action affects the subject itself. That means they reflect upon the subject. Few

examples of reflexive pronouns are, himself, yourself, herself etc. seeing an example, she..
