What NOT to do when getting back to school!

Hope you are enjoying the monsoons! Unfortunately the vacations are over and school has started for many and they are back in class. Honestly that is not so bad, considering some of our friends are busy running around trying to get into the best management and medical colleges in the country. I am talking about MBA and Medical aspirants who have been rushing to complete their NEET and CAT applications.

Well, it is a new start to a new year in school or college. Some of you are planning to enjoy and some have resolved to do a little better in studies this year. Whatever you have decided, it is not necessarily going to be all fun and games and it is really not healthy to be studying all the time. Since we have all decided what to do with our coming year, here is a list of what not to do when in school.

Not interacting with the teacher in class

The teacher is there for discipline, so as long as she is there you have decided to lie low. Regarding the questions she asks now and again you are definitely never going to answer them. They are answered by students who just want to show off. This is the basic resolve of probably most students in class. That is good for the teacher. Imagine what she will have to go through if all students wanted to have a conversation with her.

However, interacting with the teacher is always good. This way she makes sure you have understood the concepts you are there to learn. Teachers are not usually hassled by an active class, but are encouraged to innovate and come up with fun ways of learning.

Go to sleep and get up occasionally – to find out if the class is over

Many students go to school to catch up on the sleep they lose while watching a movie or a game last night. Back benchers have a good advantage in a larger class. They believe the teacher will not bother them if she does not see them.

Being present in class, but not attending lectures may get you a laugh in the canteen, however, it will not help you learn. Many times simply listening attentively to teachers can help you pass the term. Many students can easily grasp what the teacher says and a revision before the exam will help you get ahead.

Why study now? There is a whole year ahead

Since this is just the start of the year why should you start now? A last minute scan through the books is enough for you to get by. You have always done that and don’t have a reason to do any different now.

Remember paying attention in class along with a little revision will improve your understanding of the subject. Learning is not simply for passing tests, but what you learn today will help you later in life also. Make a plan regarding your studies and stick to it. If you have been given text books start reading them already.

Ask friends for notes and request them to explain the concepts

A common scenario is that students usually succeed in somehow whiling away class time and come to know about assignments and scheduled tests through other classmates. This is the time to ask for books and notes. Sometimes a strong scolding by parents brings out the sincerity in students and if they have a good rapport with the class toppers they will ask for their help in clearing concepts.

While we can emphasise again the advantages of being attentive in class, there are enough apps and video lectures floating around for you to learn and revise lessons. In fact, do go through these lectures before each class so that you are clear about the lessons and ready with questions in case you still did not understand the lesson after the teacher has explained it in class too.

Remember these are guidelines of what not to do during this New Year rather than a reminder of the things you have forgotten to do during summer vacations. Being ready with studies helps you pass your exams without unnecessary last minute revisions and late nights before exam day.
