MBA Entrance Logical Reasoning and Direct Interpretation, Tables, Module 1
Hello everyone, today we are going to start with the first session on Tables. So let us consider this
Table Set, the primary data given to you here is the following table shows the per passenger ticket
charges for AC sleeper coach bus between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in the four years that is 2000,
2001, 2002 and 2003. So here the travel agents are Prakash Transport, Thakkar Transport, Gala
Transport, Kanabar Transport and Shah Transport. And the average charges are for the years 2000,
2001, 2002 and 2003. So let’s start with the first question which says that, what is the difference
between the average charges of Gala Transport and Shah Transport for the given 4 years? Okay,
now can I say average is defined as sum of all quantities upon number of quantities? So for that I will
take the sum of Gala Transport which says that 2550 and sum of Shah Transport which is 2500. And
for average we divide it by 4. So after dividing it by 4 we get the average for Gala Transport as 637.5
and average for Shah Transport as 625. We are supposed to find out the difference in the average
charges for both of these transports so I can say 637.5 minus 625 the difference is 12.5, and hence
the answer option 5 that is 12.5. Here what we did is we

Welcome to the Parts of Speech Module of Grammar 1.
According to the function in a sentence the words in English are classified into Nouns, Verbs, etc.
which are called Parts of Speech. The various Parts of Speech are Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs,
Adjectives, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections.
The Noun. What is a Noun? A Noun is a word used to name a person, place, or thing, a quality, idea,
or act. The various functions of a noun are, nouns function as Subjects, when they are the doers of
an action in a sentence. Noun functions as Subject Complements. Subject Complements are a word
or a phrase that follows the linking verb and also describes or renames the subject of the sentence.
For example, Martha is the treasurer. The treasurer here is Subject Complement. Possessive Nouns
displays the relationship between two nouns. Nouns function as Direct Objects, when they are the
receiver of any action in a given sentence. Nouns function as Objects of Prepositions, when they
follow the Preposition and answer the questions, whom and what.
Let’s look at the second part of Speech. That is the Pronoun, the pronouns are substitutes for nouns.
Or in other way we can say they are used in the place of a Noun. Look at the various functions of
Pronouns. Pronouns act as Subjects when they are the doers of the action in any given sentence.
Pronouns also act as Direct Objects when they are the receivers of any action in a given sentence.
Pronouns also act as Objects of Prepositions, when they follow a Preposition. Possessive Pronoun
shows the relationship of a Pronoun to a Noun. Pronouns also asks question or they are also
Interrogative Pronouns.
Let’s look at the next Part of Speech which is the Adjective. A word naming an attribute of a noun,
such as a sweet cake, red shirt or a technical background, these are called Adjectives. Let’s look at a
few examples, we have a tall professor, tall here is accentuating the noun professor. Solid
commitment, solid is attributing the word commitment, it is qualitative adjective here. The
unhappiest, richest man. The words unhappiest and richest tells us a lot about this man and hence
are called adjective.
Let’s look at the verb. What is a Verb?

MBA Entrance Verbal Ability, Grammar 1, Module 1
Welcome to the Introductory Module of Grammar 1.
Success in the Verbal part of CAT depends strongly on one’s grasp of English Grammar. While it can
take a long time to get a good grasp of English Grammar, there is no point in going through a whole
lot of elaborate Grammar books. For the CAT, it is sufficient to have a good understanding of a few
basic rules and principles of English Grammar, the parts of Speech, their expressions in a sentence
and their acceptable variations and knowledge of common errors.
Grammar based questions appear in different forms in the CAT. Mostly, the questions test one’s
understanding of the standard usage. Typically, a Grammar based question may ask one to identify
an error in a given sentence, identify the correct or erroneous sentences in a given set of sentences,
or replace an underlined part with a correct one, and so on. The common

MBA Entrance Verbal Ability, Vocabulary 2, Module 1
Hello, my dear friends, in this particular session we are going to discuss FIB, that is Fill in the Blanks
which is also known as Sentence Completion and Cloze in which you are given a paragraph with
blanks. Typically these questions are challenging questions in any kind of tests. Why? Because they
challenge your vocabulary as well as your reasoning ability. Your vocabulary gets tested when your
options contain unfamiliar words. And your reasoning skills gets tested when the given words are
either synonymous or very close when it comes to meanings and you have to identify the correct
word.
Now, how we can solve these questions. First and foremost you need to study the sentence
carefully, and find out the key word or phrase which is central or main to the context expressed by
that particular sentence and the one which operates directly on the word or words given in the
blanks. Then, shortlist the words which are going to be likely answers, study the context further, and
eliminate the incorrect or inferior answers. Trust your instinct, but do not get complacent or
careless. Now there are some tips how to follow it, first and foremost you need to spend more time
on the sentence analysing the context rather than on the words in the options. The tendency of the
people is to spend more time on the answer options, however, you need to spend more time on the
sentence. Do not eliminate the words that you do not know. This is another common tendency of
the people, you need to retain those words till you have found the correct answer. Rather you
should eliminate the word the words that you know because if you can eliminate them for any
reason, they are not going to be the answer. Then try not to go to the answer in a straight forward
manner. Always work with a short list. In other words use the elimination method and reach the
correct answer. Now when you are caught between two equally right options or let’s say the
options which appear to be equally right, do not get confused, relate them to the context. One is
definitely going to be an inferior one. And then you can easily eliminate it and retain the one which
is the correct answer. Now don’t merely look for the right answer because at a time it is possible
that there is more than one right answer. So look for the scoring option, what does that mean.
Let us see by an example, the Victorian middle class woman was ______ by restraints, obligations
and _______ that prevented her from achieving economic independence. Now here you have been
given five options. Hampered – Aspirations, Emancipated – Strictures, Fettered – Responsibilities,
Ensnared – Possibilities, Surrounded – Freedoms.

MBA Entrance Verbal Ability, Vocabulary, Module 2
Dear Students, in this module we learn ways of Improving our Vocabulary. To improve memory, and
to retain words, perhaps forever, we have to learn new words based on the functions of a word.
What are the functions of a word? The first one is obviously to write. The second is to speak. And
third is to think.
To speak we need to learn the correct pronunciation. To write, the correct spelling. And to think,
which is the most important we need to master the literal and figurative meanings.
Let’s understand the process, the correct way to learn words, through an example. Let us learn this
word based on the functions of a word : Bourgeois, Spelt as B-o-u-r-g-e-o-i-s, first learn its correct
pronunciation, its pronounced as buezwa. Use the audio button in online dictionaries to hear the
word. Say the word loudly to yourself. Bourgeois. To write
