Welcome to the Parts of Speech Module of Grammar 1.

According to the function in a sentence the words in English are classified into Nouns, Verbs, etc.

which are called Parts of Speech. The various Parts of Speech are Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs,

Adjectives, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections.

The Noun. What is a Noun? A Noun is a word used to name a person, place, or thing, a quality, idea,

or act. The various functions of a noun are, nouns function as Subjects, when they are the doers of

an action in a sentence. Noun functions as Subject Complements. Subject Complements are a word

or a phrase that follows the linking verb and also describes or renames the subject of the sentence.

For example, Martha is the treasurer. The treasurer here is Subject Complement. Possessive Nouns

displays the relationship between two nouns. Nouns function as Direct Objects, when they are the

receiver of any action in a given sentence. Nouns function as Objects of Prepositions, when they

follow the Preposition and answer the questions, whom and what.

Let’s look at the second part of Speech. That is the Pronoun, the pronouns are substitutes for nouns.

Or in other way we can say they are used in the place of a Noun. Look at the various functions of

Pronouns. Pronouns act as Subjects when they are the doers of the action in any given sentence.

Pronouns also act as Direct Objects when they are the receivers of any action in a given sentence.

Pronouns also act as Objects of Prepositions, when they follow a Preposition. Possessive Pronoun

shows the relationship of a Pronoun to a Noun. Pronouns also asks question or they are also

Interrogative Pronouns.

Let’s look at the next Part of Speech which is the Adjective. A word naming an attribute of a noun,

such as a sweet cake, red shirt or a technical background, these are called Adjectives. Let’s look at a

few examples, we have a tall professor, tall here is accentuating the noun professor. Solid

commitment, solid is attributing the word commitment, it is qualitative adjective here. The

unhappiest, richest man. The words unhappiest and richest tells us a lot about this man and hence

are called adjective.
