World Oceans Day

Day: 8th June

Purpose: This day is celebrated to raise awareness about importance of ocean.

Significance:

World Oceans Day is celebrated in the last weekend of June every year. The day helps individuals understand the beauty and wealth of oceans. Human wastes have adverse effects on aquatic life. The plastic and other wastes which are thrown get ingested by the animals and is life threatening to these animals. Pollution of ocean results in death of millions of aquatic animals. Events are held at Zoos, lakes, aquariums and rivers to raise awareness about the importance of Oceans and helps in maintenance of natural equilibrium.

This day is being celebrated since 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC)

World Oceans Day is celebrated to understand the impact of human waste on the ocean. Oceans provide oxygen for survival of life of humans and animals. A Photography competition is being held by Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea on this day. The event is being held at United Nations Headquarters. The theme of photography is about Ocean and its life.

The theme for World Oceans Day 2018 is prevention of plastic pollution as you can see many people visit beaches and drop bottles and other plastic materials on the beach. The Ocean Project is being held to raise awareness by youth with their Youth Advisory Council.

Youth Advisory Council, The Ocean Project and its partners add many people and countries working towards having a healthy pollution free ocean. About 120 countries participate in this project. The people join together to discuss the reforms and steps which should be taken to save Ocean.
