Science Projects for Class 10

By |Categories: CBSE|

In India, class 10 is the most important year of schooling as it is the year where students give their common exam of whose grades is used for admission to higher grades. One of the important subjects is science which, if not taught properly will not help the children when they go to higher grades. What better way to teach science in a fun and easy way than through science experiments in physics, biology and chemistry! Experiments make science fun and easy to learn and understand. Experiments are the root of understanding because unlike other subjects, science is practical and useful for daily life and experiments show the practical approach and day to day working of the different theories in science. Here are some experiments which can be performed by 10th graders.

Acid tests:

Acid Test

This is one important experiment as almost all of the elements found in the earth is either and acid or a base. This can be tested in various ways one of which is using litmus paper. However, this is a scientific approach to the experiment and it cannot be used to determine naturally occurring acids. For example, rocks may contain calcium carbonate which is a base. It has already been proved that acid and bases react to form carbon di oxide gas and water. When rocks are submerged in vinegar, if they have any calcium carbonate, it will react with the acid in the vinegar and will fizz, producing bubbles, which are carbon di oxide bubbles.

Light and Vision:

Light and Vision

A pin hole camera is one of the basic experiments to understand light. This experiment involves taking a black box with a tiny hole through which light can enter. This will be the only point of entry for the light. As the light rays from the object you are looking at travel through the tiny hole, the image becomes inverted as light travels in straight lines. There are several experiments which can be performed to understand light but this is the most common and easy to understand.

Reaction of metals with acid:

Metals have many unique properties and some metals are more active than others. This hypothesis can be proved by making basic metals react with a strong acid such as Hydrochloric Acid. Hydrochloric Acid is one of the strongest acids and will yield better results when reacting with metal.

Experiments like these will help students have a clearer understanding of the science concepts they learn in their 10th grade.

Taking Tests to Remember Better and Score Higher

By |Categories: Blog, Parents, Students, Teachers|Tags: , , |

Studying is important because it is a part of learning. Students’ need to remember information that will be asked in the exam at the end of the year. Students should attempt to evaluate their knowledge immediately after a studying session. However, evaluation is not the only use of tests. There has been enough research done to show that tests are beneficial to students because they help to remember what they studied better.

Tests Improve Memory

When tests are added to one’s learning routine it helps in retention of what has been learnt better than studying further on the same topic. The test, of course, should be patterned around recall. In a research done by many scholars including Wheeler, Ewers, and Buonanno (2003) testing strengthens or enhances the retrieval process and reduces loss of memory regarding the material studied. Research done by other scholars have clearly demonstrated that tests provide retrieval practice, increase accessibility and increases the number of retrieval routes.

Taking Mock Tests to Score High

Taking tests for your exam preparation is an important step towards assured success. When you take a mock test you get mentally prepared to face the actual exam since the mock test is designed to be replica of the actual exam paper. Also, taking tests help you to:

1. Strengthen your long term memory

Repetitively taking mock tests helps you memorize what you studied over a longer period of time.

2. Retrieval practice

Your brain gets a chance to retrieve the knowledge that you have stored there when you had studied. This way you increase your power of memory recollection for better performance in the actual exam.

“Taking practice tests — particularly ones that involve attempting to recall something from memory — can drastically increase the likelihood that you’ll be able to remember that information again later,” Dr. Katherine Rawson said. Dr. Katherine Rawson, associate professor in Kent State’s department of psychology, and former Kent State graduate student Mary Pyc — reported the findings of a study that examined the inherent benefits of test-taking on memory.

Empirical studies on the testing effect were documented by Gates as early as 1917. Later on in 1992, Carrier and Pashler carried out a study trial to prove the testing effect theory. It was observed that learners who practiced by tests retained more knowledge than their counterparts who spent equal amount of time just studying the information.

Regular Tests in Robomate+

Tests are available in Robomate+ app at the end of every module and at the end of every chapter. Thus, if you attempt these on a regular basis, it will help you remember all the information for a long time. After all, recollection is always better than re-reading your study material over and over again for long term memory. Furthermore, immediate recollection is far better than recollecting or testing your knowledge 7 or 10 days down the line after you have studied. This is exactly why Robomate+ app provides for immediate tests after every module.

Tests in Robomate+ are designed to exercise complete retrieval of the studied information. Since the retrieval of the same memory is tested in a bunch of different and difficult ways, the memory becomes stronger and sharper to prepare you for the actual exam when the time comes.

Professional Courses You Can Choose After Std. 12

By |Categories: Blog, Parents, Students|Tags: , |

Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) or 12th exam is supposed to be the turning point of career for most Indian students. After 12th, students face several options. There are huge range of courses offered in colleges and universities in India. Here are the courses after 12th offered in various streams.

Engineering

Engineering is, by far, one of the conventional and career oriented courses in the country. According to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), around 1 million students graduate from polytechnics, government universities and private colleges all the year round. According to the branch and institute you select, an engineering course costs up to Rs. 300,000 to Rs. 1 million in India.

Law

Law students enjoy huge demand in India. According to the Universities Grant Commission, around 400,000 students graduate every year with law degrees. The BA, LLB (Bachelor of Arts and Legum Baccalaureus) is the 5 year course offered in most government law colleges. It costs somewhere from Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 300,000, as per the university.

Medicine

Every year, around 55000 students graduate every year as doctors, especially in Ayurveda, Allopathy, Homeopathy, Dentistry, and Unani. Some of the common courses are Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine & Science (BAMS), Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Science (MBBS), Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Science (BHMS), Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Science (BUMS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). A typical medical course costs from Rs. 300,000 to Rs. 1 million.

Chartered Accountant

For higher studies, Chartered Accountancy is the best choice. According to the amount of time required, you are flexible to work and study with this 3 to 5 year course. It is, indeed, important to work with study. The exam and course is conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). The cost of the course is around Rs. 50000.

Web Designing, IT

Today, a lot of foreign companies are in search of IT experts and India has been the best choice. Up to 100,000 students every year enroll for web design and IT courses. A lot of engineering students are also switching to IT courses. Some of the best IT courses are Bachelor of Computer Management and Bachelor of Computer Science offered by several universities and colleges. The cost of a typical 3-year course is from Rs. 400,000 to Rs. 1 million, according to the university/college.

Other Courses

Post 12th, the course you choose will decide your career choices in future. Unfortunately, Indian youth is suffering from “Me Too” philosophy. They choose a particular course just because their friends are choosing it, rather than thinking out of the box. Here are some of the best courses offering great career options but are still overlooked –

♦ Agriculture (including floriculture and horticulture)
♦ Forensic sciences
♦ Geology
♦ Marine biology
♦ Pyrotechnics
♦ Warehousing and logistics
♦ Nutrition
♦ Micro biology
♦ Food technology
♦ Industrial security and safety

Verdict

While going for courses after 12, you need to consider various factors. Indian youth is more focused on engineering, medicine, and IT. They prefer courses that give them a label to improve their social status. Indians choose degrees for their matrimonial and social aspects, instead of their profitability and interest. Also parents don’t allow them to follow their own dreams. Well, there is no lack of career choices once you are open to them.

Courses and Streams You can Choose after 10th

By |Categories: Blog, Parents, Teachers|Tags: , , , , , , |

As soon as you are done with your tenth standard board exams, the next hurdle comes along. That is of choosing a definite stream for the next two years. This decision is extremely crucial as it will also decide your career path. The courses you choose will narrow down your subjects of interest and hence should be chosen wisely.

It is always better to identify your areas of interest in the school days, so that you can choose the relevant courses for 11th and 12th.

Parents are advised against forcing children into taking up courses that they have no interest in. They will do it halfheartedly and it may spoil their career in the future.

The broad classification of traditional courses after tenth standard are as follows:

1. Science without mathematics:

If your area of interest covers Biology, Chemistry or Physics, this is what you should choose. Future prospects of this choice includes doctor, pharmacist, chemist, biologist, physicist, nurse, etc.

2. Science with mathematics:

All aspiring engineers walk down this aisle since mathematics is the key to this specialization. Other future prospects include mathematician, physicist, chemist, polytechnic jobs, consultancy, etc.

3. Commerce:

If economics is your best friend, then commerce is what you are looking for. Also, it is to be noted that most people tend to do an MBA post any specialization or degree these days. Hence, if you plan to do that in future anyway, it is wiser to go for commerce from the very beginning instead of draining your brain in something that you would not pursue later.

4. Arts:

From literature to history, every non-science and commerce subject comes under this category. Future prospects of this choice include academic lecturer, journalism, mass communication, advertising, etc.

Diploma courses after tenth:

You can also take up professional courses after 10th standard. Many colleges offer engineering (civil, computer, mechanical, chemical, automobile, marine, etc.) as well as non-engineering diploma courses (fashion design, food technology, garment technology, architectural assistantship, etc.) that can be pursued soon after your 10th standard.

Consult a Career Counselor

You can also consult professional career counselors who can help you figure out your future in a better way. For everyone it might not be possible to be informed about careers that may do well in the future. So taking the right decision of a career choice may be difficult. Career counseling will help you.

Decide What you want.

The most important thing is to ask yourself before you decide your course of action is : what exactly do you want in life? This is the fundamental question that will guide you through your future. No amount of advice from anyone will prove fruitful unless you yourself identify your interest. From acting to cooking, it can be anything and for that you have to choose your subjects/courses wisely. Take this phase to be the turning point in your life and take a decision that you won`t regret in the future.

All the best!

Shivayogi – Determination that will leave you speechless

By |Categories: Blog, Parents, Students, Teachers|Tags: , , , |

Success has never been easy for someone coming from an ordinary background. If a person achieves academic success in the early years, then goes on to get top class scores in higher courses, he is an inspiration to aspiring students. Most students feel overwhelmed by studies and doubt their abilities to be top scorers because of hurdles such as background, school, and other learning tools usually acquired by a privileged few. Imagine the odds against someone with the usual setbacks and add to that an inability to hear and speak. This is the story of young Shivayogi who fought against all odds to score 96% in Karnataka PU (Science) this year and dreams of becoming an engineer.

Communication and Understanding

Communication is something that binds humans together. The process involves exchange of information between people. It’s a known fact that hearing provides a window to the world. When a person has a hearing impairment, he will be deprived of opportunities to experience the world of sounds and usually fails to understand or make sense of what’s happening around him. The result is delay in speech and language development, making it difficult for academic work, recreation, vocation and other social participation.

“A doctor in Dharwad confirmed Shivayogi’s speech and hearing impairment and advised us to get him treated at ‘All India Institute for Speech and Hearing’,” says Nagaratna, Mother of Shivayogi. “We further admitted him at ‘Rotary West Institute for Mother and Deaf Child’ for a four-year training course. The special training provided by the educators there, Ratna Shetty in particular, helped him reading and comprehending lip movements and overcome the problem in learning,” she says expressing gratitude.

Trying to fit in

When Shivayogi turned six, he got admitted in one of the renowned schools in Karwar i.e. KHEP High School of KPCL where his father himself was a staff member. Since his early days he always had problems coping up with society. Interacting with peers and family members caused irritation and tested everybody’s patience. Even when he felt optimistic some incident would make him aware of his disability.

“I used to be cynical about my abilities as there used be instances when people around me had to compromise so many aspects, which sometimes made me grumpy and dejected,” says Shivayogi.

He started to read books about inspiring people particularly Bharat Shetty Barkar who battled similar fate as his with optimum success.

He began believing in his abilities and started expanding his knowledge to broaden his horizons. He now wanted to achieve as much as possible.  It is not as if his problems and conflicts disappeared, but he did change. “I have begotten an endurance to cross over the hurdles that are laid before me,” pens Shivayogi.

The result of his new found courage was an astounding score of 606 out of 625 marks in SSLC exam. This success instilled the highest level of optimism in him and he decided to pursue PUC in the stream of Science.

Aiming Higher

Though Shivayogi had created a stir in SSLC exam through his stellar performance, taking up Science in Pre-University level would prove to be a daunting task as education in North-Karnataka had not reached such a stage to support speech and hearing impaired children with a flawless education.

The educators at ICS Mahesh PU College, Dharwad, Shivayogi recognized his special talent early on. However, they were not used to dealing with a student like Shivayogi since oral communication is considered to be one of the most effective and primary modes of communication in teaching. They took up Shivayogi’s case as a challenge and his grit and determination became the determining factors.

Using Technology as a Tutor

Constant ‘lecture mode’ learning increases fatigue. Most children have short attention spans and find it hard to keep abreast. For Shivayogi this was an even bigger challenge. He resorted to Robomate to overcome this problem. The interactive study material which is carefully designed to ensure maximum and adaptive learning helped him approach studies in a different way. Robomate became Shivayogi’s constant companion since he found it easy to follow.

Shivayogi scored an aggregate of 96.5% in PCMC and an overall score of 93% in PUC II year. He thanks technology and emergence of the internet as more and more content is being shared online. Shivayogi has also cleared JEE Mains.

Shivayogi’s story is truly inspirational since it highlights the human qualities that have always differentiated between achievers and also-rans. That is determination and hard work.
